ABOUT

I am a social scientist and health scientist. I completed my PhD in Psychology at Staffordshire University (2009) and worked in the Department of Applied Science at London South Bank University (2008-2014), the School of Psychology at the University of Wollongong (2014-2021), and the Department of Psychology at Leeds Trinity University, UK (2022-2023). My research focuses on the treatment and prevention of chronic conditions including sexual dysfunction and obesity. I am particularly interested in understanding the role of healthy living and individual difference factors in male and female sexual dysfunction. Recently, my work has explored the psychosocial processes involved in diet, exercise and cigarette smoking, the role of teacher self-confidence in child development, and how rejection sensitivity relates to romantic relationship parameters such as sexual risk taking and intimate partner violence. In 2019 I helped develop a certified medical program for the treatment of erectile dysfunction operating in Europe and the US.

In my free time I like to stay active. I am a frequent runner and social tennis and soccer player. I also read a considerable amount of books and enjoy playing online chess

My Research

My research encompasses observational studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, experimental studies, questionnaire development, and guideline development. I have published over 100 journal articles and authored an undergraduate textbook on the psychology of sport and physical activity (published by Pearson in 2014). I am associate editor for the European Journal of Psychological Assessment and have reviewed over 100 manuscripts for 50 other journals.

In terms of major research articles, I am the lead author of a comprehensive review on personality and sexual health published in Psychological Bulletin (Allen & Walter, 2018a) and authored a detailed review of physical activity as a treatment for erectile dysfunction published in Nature Reviews Urology (Allen, 2019).  I am also lead author of a systematic review that included 92 meta-analyses of sexual dysfunction and health behaviours such as cigarette smoking, cannabis use, diet, physical activity and alcohol intake (Allen & Walter, 2018b), and lead author of an umbrella review of 98 meta-analyses on erectile dysfunction treatment (Allen & Walter, 2019) published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
